Get Found on Google Maps: Business Profile Setup for Ghanaian Businesses

Someone two streets away is typing "welder near me" right now. If your business is not on Google Maps, that job goes to whoever is — even if their work is worse than yours.
A Business Profile is free, takes under an hour, and is the highest-return hour most Ghanaian trade businesses will ever spend on marketing.
What it gets you
- You appear in Maps and in the local results above ordinary search results
- Your phone number becomes one tap from the search result
- Reviews — the single most persuasive thing a stranger can read about you
- Photos of your work, in the place people look first
- Directions to your workshop, which walk-in trade genuinely uses
Setting it up, step by step
- Search your business name on Google first. Someone may have created an unclaimed listing already — claim that rather than making a duplicate.
- Go to Google Business Profile and create or claim the profile. You need a Google account.
- Enter the exact business name — the name on your signboard and your invoices, with no keyword stuffing. "Kwame Metal Works" is correct; "Kwame Metal Works Best Gates Burglar Proof Accra" risks suspension.
- Choose the right primary category. This matters more than almost anything else: "Welder", "Metal fabricator", "Metal workshop", "Carpenter", "Plumber". Add secondary categories for the rest of what you do.
- Add your address, and your GhanaPostGPS digital address where it helps. If you work from customers' sites rather than a shop, set a service area instead of a public address.
- Verification. Google may verify by postcard, phone, email or video. Video verification is increasingly common in Ghana — they ask you to film your premises, signboard and tools in one continuous take. Have the signboard up and the shop tidy before you start.
- Complete everything. Hours (including Saturdays — trade customers search on Saturdays), phone, WhatsApp link, services list, and a short description with the words people actually use: gates, burglar proof, railings, tank stands, the neighbourhoods you cover.
- Add photos properly. Ten to twenty of your best finished work, in daylight, plus the shopfront and the team. Add a few new ones monthly; active profiles do better than dormant ones.
The mistakes that keep you invisible
- Wrong or missing category. Fix this before anything else.
- Keyword-stuffed business name. Risks suspension and looks desperate.
- No verification completed. An unverified profile barely shows.
- Inconsistent details across your profile, your signboard, your invoices and your Facebook page. Consistency is a ranking signal and a trust signal.
- Dead profile. No photos since 2023, no replies to reviews, hours not updated over the holidays.
- No reviews. The one fixable thing that most small businesses ignore.
Reviews: how to actually get them
- Ask, at handover, while the client is admiring the work. That is the moment and it does not come back.
- Send the direct review link by WhatsApp with a one-line message: "Thank you for your business — if you have a minute, a short review on Google helps us a lot." Google gives you a share link inside the profile.
- Never buy reviews. They get removed and they can cost you the listing.
- Reply to every review, good and bad. A calm, specific reply to a complaint sells better to future customers than five five-star reviews.
- Aim for a steady trickle, not twenty in one week — which looks exactly like what it is.
Beyond the profile
- Consistency everywhere. Same name, number and address on your profile, Facebook page, WhatsApp Business and your invoices.
- A page of your own to link to — your work, your reviews, a contact button. If you use Fabri Manager, the built-in showroom page does this and every enquiry lands in your leads list instead of getting lost in a chat.
- Set up WhatsApp Business properly — Google brings the click, WhatsApp closes it.
Common questions
Is Google Business Profile free in Ghana? Yes, entirely. Anyone charging you for the listing itself is charging you for a free thing.
Can I register without a physical shop? Yes — use a service area instead of a public address. You will still appear in local searches.
How long until I show up? Usually days after verification. Ranking in the top few for a competitive term takes photos, reviews and consistency over months.
What if a competitor leaves a fake bad review? Report it through the profile and reply factually and calmly in public. Do not argue; future customers are the audience.
Getting found is half the job. Answering fast, quoting in writing the same day, and following up is the other half — Fabri Manager handles that half.
