Automatic Gate Motors in Ghana (2026): Prices, Types and Installation

An automatic gate is the single upgrade homeowners in Ghana enjoy most — nobody misses climbing out of the car in the rain to push a gate. It is also where the most money is wasted, because the motor is usually chosen by price and installed by whoever is nearest.

Motors are imported, so the cedi decides a lot. A total of GH₵ 7,000 – 25,000 covers most residential automation jobs done properly, motor and installation together.

Sliding or swing — and does your gate suit it?

• Sliding gate motors sit beside the gate and drive it along a gear rack. Straightforward, reliable, and the usual choice where there is a wall to slide along.
• Swing gate motors come as arm operators or underground units for a pair of leaves. Underground looks cleanest and costs most; arms are easier to service.

The critical question comes earlier than the motor: was the gate built to be automated? A gate that sags, binds on its track, or was welded heavier on one side will destroy a motor that a well-built gate would run for a decade. If you are having a gate fabricated now, say that you will automate it later — building it ready costs little; converting one that was not costs a lot.

The two things people forget

1. Power cuts. A motor without battery backup means a gate you cannot open when the lights go off. Every kit should include a manual release, and most should include a battery. Ask to be shown the manual release before the installer leaves — and then let everyone in the house practise it once.

2. Safety. A motorised gate is a heavy machine and children treat it as furniture. Photocell beams that stop the gate when something crosses its path, plus properly set force limits, are not upsellsy extras. Anyone who installs an automatic gate without safety beams is saving you money in the worst place.

Choosing a motor that lasts

• Match the motor to the gate weight, with headroom. An installer who does not ask the gate's weight and length is guessing.
• Duty cycle matters for a busy compound or an office: cheap motors overheat when opened thirty times a day.
• Ask what spares availability is like in Ghana. A brand nobody stocks locally is a brand you will one day replace entirely.

• Get the warranty in writing — what it covers, for how long, and who honours it: the seller or the installer?

Questions for the installer

1. What make and model, and what gate weight is it rated for?
2. Is a battery backup included, and how many cycles does it give?
3. Are photocell safety beams included?
4. How many remotes, and what do extras cost?
5. Who services it, and what does a service visit cost?
6. What exactly does the warranty cover?

Write the answers on the quotation. An installer who will put them in writing is telling you something useful about the next two years.

Common questions

Can any gate be automated? Most can, but a gate that is heavy, warped or badly hung should be repaired first. Automation makes a bad gate's problems louder, not quieter.

What happens during a power cut? With a battery backup, it keeps working for a while; without one, you use the manual release. Check that the release can be reached from outside if you park outside.

How long do gate motors last in Ghana? A well-specified, surge-protected motor on a well-built gate commonly runs five to ten years. Under-specified motors fail in one or two.

Is it cheaper to buy the motor myself and hire a fitter? Sometimes on paper, but you split the warranty in two. If you do, keep every receipt and agree in advance who is responsible for what.
