Carport and Canopy Prices in Ghana (2026): Steel, Aluzinc and Polycarbonate

Ghana's sun does two things to a parked car: it cooks the interior and it kills the paint. A carport is the cheapest fix, and — unlike a garage — it can be added to a finished house in a weekend.

Here is what one costs and what separates a carport that lasts from one that folds in the first real storm.

Carports are priced by covered area and roofing type, fabricated and installed:

Concrete work for the footings, and any paving underneath, is usually quoted separately. Ask.

Choosing the roof

• Aluzinc / coloured metal sheet — the standard. Cheapest, fully shaded, and noisy in heavy rain. Choose a decent gauge; see roofing sheet prices.
• Polycarbonate — translucent, modern, lets light through to the plants and the house behind. Costs more, and quality varies enormously: cheap sheet yellows and goes brittle within a few years under our sun. Ask for a UV-protected sheet and its warranty.
• Shade net / fabric — cheapest by far, cools well, keeps the bird droppings off. It is shade, not shelter: rain comes through, and the fabric needs replacing every few years.
• Aluminium composite or tile profile — for when the carport must match an expensive house. Priced accordingly.

What actually decides whether it survives

A carport is a big flat sail on legs. Almost every failure in Ghana is one of these five:

1. Footings too shallow. The posts must be set in properly sized concrete footings, below the loose topsoil. This is the most common corner cut and the most expensive one.
2. Posts too light. Thin-wall pipe flexes, then fatigues at the welds. Ask for the post size and wall thickness in writing.
3. No bracing. Diagonal bracing, or a proper moment connection at the post head, is what stops the whole frame racking sideways in a squall.
4. Fixings instead of welds where it matters. Sheets must be fixed with the correct screws and washers at the right spacing — a loose sheet becomes a blade in a storm.
5. No fall for water. A flat roof with no slope ponds, sags and leaks. There should be a visible fall, and somewhere for the water to go that is not your wall or your neighbour's.

Add one more, for our climate: rust at the base. Posts sitting in water at ground level rot from the bottom. A good fabricator primes and finishes the base properly, and ideally sets the steel above the concrete, not into a puddle.

Questions before you pay

• What post size and wall thickness, and how deep are the footings?
• What roofing material, thickness and warranty?
• How is the water shed, and where does it go?
• Is the concrete work in this price, or extra?
• Does the price include making good the paving or the wall it attaches to?
• How long is the quotation valid?

Common questions

How much is a double carport in Ghana? Most double carports land between GH₵ 11,000 and GH₵ 25,000 with an aluzinc roof, more with polycarbonate, depending on steel sizes, height and finish.

Polycarbonate or metal sheet? Metal for value and full shade; polycarbonate for looks and light — but only a UV-protected grade, or it will yellow.

Can a carport be attached to the house wall? Yes, if the wall can take it and the flashing is done properly. Badly flashed, it channels rain into your wall — insist on how that joint will be sealed.

Do I need permission to build one? Structures on your plot can require approval from your local assembly. Check with your MMDA before building, especially if it is close to a boundary.
