How Much Do Welders Charge in Ghana? Rates, Day Work and Callouts

"How much will you charge me?" is the first question every welder in Ghana gets, and it is usually answered badly — either with a number pulled from the air or with "let me see it first" and no follow-up.

Both sides deserve better. Here is how welding labour is actually priced.

The four ways welding work is charged

ModelWhen it is usedTypical shape
Per item / per jobGates, burglar proof, stands — most fabricationOne quoted price covering materials plus labour
Day rateOn-site work, repairs, contract labourA day's charge per welder, plus materials
Callout + hourlyEmergency and small repairsA minimum callout, then time
Per metre / per unitRailings, fencing, repetitive workA rate multiplied by the run

Most homeowners meet the first model: you get one price for the gate. The labour is inside it, which is why two quotes can differ so much — one workshop counted five days of work honestly, the other counted three and will rush yours.

Typical charges (2026)

Rates vary by region, skill and whether the welder brings a machine, a generator and transport:

WorkTypical range
Workshop day rate, per welderGH₵ 200 – 600
Skilled / certified welder, day rateGH₵ 400 – 1,200
Small on-site repair (callout)GH₵ 150 – 600
Gate hinge repair / re-weldGH₵ 200 – 800
Re-weld and straighten a sagging gateGH₵ 500 – 2,500
Site work with own generatoradd GH₵ 150 – 400 per day

For context on employment rather than contracting: published salary data puts most welders in Ghana between roughly GH₵ 1,900 and GH₵ 6,600 per month, which is the range a workshop owner is working inside when they set a day rate — and a reminder that a GH₵ 200 day rate is close to the floor, not a bargain.

What a welder is actually charging you for

When a quote seems high for "just welding", it is usually carrying more than welding:

  • Time. Measuring, cutting, fabricating, grinding, priming, painting, loading, travelling, installing, coming back to touch up.
  • Consumables. Electrodes, discs, gas, primer, paint, thinner.
  • Power. Welding is heavy on electricity, and a generator on a site without power is fuel plus wear.
  • Transport. Steel to the shop, the item to your house, and the return trip.
  • Overheads and risk. Rent, machines, the apprentice, the warranty they are quietly promising you.
  • Skill. A weld that holds a two-tonne water tank is not the same product as a weld that holds a gate stopper.

Full breakdown for those quoting: how to price a fabrication job.

For clients: how to get a fair price

  • Describe the job precisely and send photos. Vague jobs get padded prices, because the welder is pricing uncertainty.
  • Ask for the quote in writing, itemised — materials and labour separately if you want to compare.
  • Do not negotiate the labour to nothing. A welder squeezed on labour recovers it on steel thickness, and you will never see that happen.
  • Bundle the work. Gate, burglar proof and a tank stand quoted together earns a better price than three separate callouts.
  • Pay on time. The clients who pay promptly are the ones who get answered first next time.

For welders: how to charge properly

  • Know your day rate — real cost per worker per day, including empty days.
  • Never quote on the spot. "I will send it this evening" wins better prices than guessing at the gate.
  • Charge for the callout. Your travel and diagnosis time has value; free quotations for site visits across town are a slow way to lose money.
  • Put labour in the quotation as a line. Clients respect labour they can see and haggle labour they cannot.
  • Take a deposit for materials, always.

Common questions

What is a fair day rate for a welder in Ghana? Commonly GH₵ 200 – 600 for general workshop labour, more for skilled or certified welders and for site work where the welder supplies power.

Do welders charge for quotations? Most do not for shop work, but a site visit across town reasonably carries a callout charge.

Why does one welder charge double another? Steel thickness, honest time estimates, finish quality, and whether a warranty exists. Compare specifications, not totals.

Is it cheaper to buy materials myself? Sometimes, but buy to the welder's written list — wrong sizes cost more than any saving.

Fabri Manager lets a workshop send a proper itemised quotation in minutes — materials, labour, transport — so the price is explainable and the job is recorded from the first message.
