Security Door Prices in Ghana (2026): Imported vs Locally Fabricated

A security door is the one purchase where the showroom and the reality differ most. Two doors of the same size, same colour and the same confident sales talk can be 1mm of steel and one lock cylinder apart — and that difference is the entire product.

Imported doors move with the exchange rate and shipping; locally fabricated doors move with steel prices. Both move.

Imported or locally made?

Imported (mostly Chinese, often sold as Turkish-style)

• Comes finished: leaf, frame, locks, hinges, sometimes a peephole and handle set
• Consistent look, wood-effect or painted finishes, quick to install
• Watch for: thin skin over a light frame, lock cylinders that cannot be re-keyed, and no spares when a hinge or handle fails in year three

Locally fabricated

• Made to your opening, which matters in houses where nothing is standard
• Steel gauge is your choice — you can ask for heavier than any import
• Repairable by the person who made it, for years
• Watch for: finish quality (this is where local doors are beaten), and alignment if the frame was not set carefully

The honest summary: imports usually win on looks and price, local fabrication usually wins on strength and repairability. Which matters more depends on whether the door is your front entrance or your back gate.

What actually makes a door secure

1. The frame and how it is fixed. A strong door in a weakly anchored frame is a weakly anchored frame. It should be bolted or welded into the wall, at multiple points, not just foamed in.
2. The lock. Multi-point locking — bolts that throw into the frame at top, middle and bottom — is a genuine upgrade over one central latch. Ask what happens if the cylinder is drilled or snapped.
3. Hinge protection. Hinges on the outside are a gift unless the door has fixed dog-bolts on the hinge side.
4. Steel thickness. The skin and the internal frame both matter; a door that flexes when you push the middle is a thin door.
5. The glass, if any. Decorative glass beside a door is a way in. Grille it or specify laminated glass.
6. Fitting. A door that has to be lifted to lock will not be locked properly for long.

Before you buy

• Open and close it in the shop. Feel the weight, listen to the lock throw.
• Ask for the steel thickness and the lock brand and type.
• Ask what warranty covers, and who honours it — the importer or the fitter?
• Confirm fitting is included, and who repairs the wall afterwards.

How much is a security door in Ghana? Most single-leaf steel doors run GH₵ 1,700 – 4,500; Turkish-style and premium doors commonly start around GH₵ 3,900 and climb with size and finish.

Are Turkish doors actually made in Turkey? Often not — many are Chinese-manufactured in a Turkish style. That is not automatically bad, but buy on specification rather than on the name.

Is a metal door better than a wooden one? For external doors in Ghana's climate, yes: no swelling, no termites, better security. Good hardwood still wins indoors for feel.
