Powder Coating vs Spray Painting in Ghana: Cost, Durability and When Each Wins

Every year more Ghanaian workshops offer powder coating, and every year more clients ask whether it is worth the extra. The short answer: usually yes on new work, and rarely on repairs.

Here is the long answer.

What they actually are

Spray painting is liquid paint — primer plus top coats — applied with a gun or by brush, air-dried. It can be done anywhere, including on your compound, and it can be touched up with a tin from the shop.

Powder coating is dry polymer powder applied electrostatically, then baked in an oven so it flows into one continuous shell. It has to happen in a shop with a booth and an oven, and the part must fit inside that oven.

That last point decides more jobs than price does: a 6-metre sliding gate will not fit in most ovens in Ghana, so it gets sprayed even when the client wanted powder.

Head to head

When powder coating wins

• Burglar proof and window grilles. They fit in the oven, there are many of them, and the even edge coverage is exactly what resists rust.
• Railings, balustrades and furniture. Touched constantly; powder survives it.
• Aluminium windows and slim sections. The finish is the product.
• Anything near the coast. Continuous, pinhole-free coverage is a serious advantage in salt air.
• Anything you would hate to repaint — including things high up.

When spray painting is still right

• Large gates and long structures that will not fit an oven.
• On-site work: fences, tank stands already installed, structures erected in place.
• Repairs and touch-ups, where matching an existing finish matters more than durability.
• Tight budgets — a properly prepared, well-primed spray job is a perfectly respectable finish. Preparation matters more than the method: see stopping rust in Ghana.
• Custom colours that no powder stock carries.

Getting either one done properly

The failure mode is identical for both: bad preparation.

• Powder coating over mill scale or rust fails in sheets rather than in spots — and it cannot be locally patched.
• Ask whether parts are sandblasted or chemically pre-treated before coating. "We clean it" is not an answer.
• For powder, ask about the oven size before you design a gate around a finish it cannot receive.
• For spray, insist on primer plus two top coats, with drying time between them, and no spraying in the rain or in dust.
• On galvanised steel, both need the right pre-treatment or nothing will stick.

The practical pattern for a whole house

Most well-finished Ghanaian houses end up doing this, and it is a sensible default:

• Powder coat the burglar proof, railings and any aluminium — the many small, touchable, hard-to-repaint pieces.
• Spray the gate and the carport properly, with good primer, accepting a repaint every three to four years.
• Galvanise the tank stand, and forget about it.

Common questions

Is powder coating worth it in Ghana? On items that fit the oven and are hard to repaint — yes. Expect to pay 30–80% more on the finishing and get two to four times the life.

Can a powder-coated gate be repaired if it chips? Only imperfectly — touch-up paint will not match the texture. Small chips are best sealed promptly to stop rust creeping under the coating.

Which lasts longer near the sea? Powder coating, clearly — provided the pre-treatment was done properly.

Can old metalwork be powder coated? Yes, if it fits the oven and can be stripped back to bare metal first. Stripping is often the bigger part of the bill.
