Choosing a gate design is the most enjoyable decision in a build and the one most often made from a screenshot. The screenshot is fine — just know what the design will cost to fabricate here, and how it will look after two rainy seasons.

Which designs suit Ghana's conditions

• Airflow beats total privacy on a hot compound. A fully sealed sheet gate blocks the breeze and turns into a sail in a storm — which means heavier frames, heavier hinges, and a bigger bill.
• Dust settles in detail. Deep scrollwork and intricate laser cuts look spectacular and need washing. If nobody in the house will wash a gate, choose a simpler pattern.
• Wood-effect is a maintenance promise. Real hardwood inserts need oiling; printed wood-effect finishes vary hugely in how they hold up under our sun. Ask to see one that has been outside for two years.
• Dark colours show dust; light colours show rust streaks. Mid-tone greys, bronzes and charcoals are the pragmatic middle, and they are what most Ghanaian fabricators paint best.
• Sliding suits short driveways and slopes. Swing suits wide frontages with space. Decide this before the design — it changes the framing.

The details that make a gate look expensive

1. Straight lines and even gaps. Nothing reveals workmanship faster than slats of slightly different spacing.
2. Hidden fixings. Visible bolt heads on a modern gate cheapen it instantly.
3. A proper frame. 2" section with correct bracing stays flat; a light frame bows and the whole design loses its line.
4. Finish preparation. Two coats over rust is a gate that looks two years old on day one. Insist on wire-brushing, primer and a quality top coat, or powder coating.
5. Matching everything else. Gate, burglar proof, railings and carport in one language — same pattern or the same finish — reads as designed rather than assembled.
