Burglar Proof Designs: Modern Styles for Ghanaian Homes (and What They Cost)

Burglar proof has a reputation problem: most of it is designed to be strong and nothing else, and the house ends up looking guarded rather than finished.

It does not have to. The steel that stops a thief costs the same whether the pattern is ugly or elegant — the difference is mostly the drawing.

Making it look intentional instead of added

• Match the gate. If the gate is horizontal slat, run horizontals in the burglar proof too. One pattern across the whole house reads as architecture.
• Paint it to disappear or to contrast — not in between. Same colour as the window frame makes it vanish; a deliberate dark contrast makes it a feature. Mid-grey over white frames just looks like an afterthought.
• Keep the pattern to the window's proportion. A design drawn for a wide hall window looks cramped repeated on a small bathroom window. Scale it.
• Fit it inside the reveal where possible, not surface-mounted over the plaster — it looks built-in rather than bolted-on, and it protects the fixings from rain.
• Powder coat if the budget allows. It is the single biggest difference in how burglar proof looks in year five.

The safety rules no design gets to break

1. At least one openable panel per bedroom, lockable from inside, key kept where adults can reach it in the dark. Burglar proof keeps thieves out and it keeps families in — design for the fire, not just the thief.
2. Gaps narrow enough that a small child cannot get through or get a head stuck.
3. No climbable ladder pattern on anything a child can reach from outside.
4. Fixings into solid material, not into plaster. A beautiful grille that pulls out of the wall is decoration.
5. Nothing that traps water. Horizontal members should not hold standing water against the wall — that is how rust streaks start.

Working with your fabricator on a design

• Bring two or three photos of what you like, and be honest that it is a starting point.
• Give them the window schedule — every opening with its size. See how to measure.
• Ask for the design drawn or mocked up on one window first if the house has many. A sample window is cheap; twenty wrong windows are not.
• Agree which windows get openable panels in writing, on the quotation.

What is the most popular burglar proof design in Ghana now? Geometric and slim-bar designs in charcoal or white powder coat, often matched to a slat gate — decorative floral work remains strong in older neighbourhoods and on grand frontages.

Does a decorative design weaken it? Not if the members are the right size and properly welded. Weakness comes from thin steel and bad welds, not from pattern. Learn to spot bad welding.

Can burglar proof be made to look like aluminium? Yes — slim sections, powder-coated white or grey, fitted inside the reveal. It reads as part of the window rather than as security.

Can I change the design later? Repainting is easy; re-patterning is a new grille. Spend the extra half-hour at the design stage.
