Burglar Proof Prices in Ghana (2026): Cost Per Window and What Decides It

Burglar proof — the steel grille fitted over a window — is the cheapest security a house in Ghana can buy. It is also one of the most inconsistently priced items in the building trade: two workshops can quote the same window and land GH₵ 400 apart, both honestly.

This guide explains what you are actually paying for, what the ranges look like in 2026, and how to compare quotes without having to become a welder.

Typical prices per window (2026)

Burglar proof is priced per window, by the size of the opening and the design. Treat these as realistic starting ranges for mild steel, fabricated and fitted:

A typical three-bedroom house with ten openings therefore lands somewhere between GH₵ 8,000 and GH₵ 20,000 for the full set — which is why fabricators prefer to quote the house rather than the window, and why the per-window price usually improves when you do all of them at once.

Steel is priced in dollars and the cedi moves, so a quote from six months ago is history, not a benchmark.

The six things that decide your price

1. Size of the opening. More area is more steel and more welding — the single biggest factor.
2. The steel itself. Square pipe or solid rod, and the gauge. Thin-gauge 3/4" pipe looks identical to heavy gauge on delivery day and very different after four harmattans. Ask for the size and the gauge in writing.
3. Design. Straight bars fabricate fast. Curves, twisted bars, flower motifs and laser-cut panels take a skilled hand and hours at the bench — that is most of the gap between two quotes.
4. Material grade. Mild steel is the standard. Stainless costs roughly two to three times more and earns it near the coast, where salt air eats ordinary paint. Aluminium grilles are light and rust-free but far weaker — decorative rather than protective.
5. Finish. Wire-brushed, primed, and finished with a proper enamel or powder coat is the difference between a grille that still looks new in year five and one that streaks rust down your wall in year two.
6. Installation. Fixing into concrete or blockwork, distance to site, and whether they return to touch up the paint after plastering. "Supply only" and "supply and fit" are not the same quote — check which one you were given.

Fixed, openable, or escape hatch?

The cheapest burglar proof is welded solid over the window. It is also a trap in a fire.

• Fixed grille — cheapest, most common.
• Openable / hinged panel — a section that swings in, locked from inside. Adds roughly GH₵ 150 – 400 per window, and it is the version that lets your family out and lets you clean the glass.
• Escape window — at minimum, one openable panel per bedroom. If you build nothing else into the budget, build that.

Fire officers everywhere say the same thing: burglar proof keeps thieves out, and it keeps people in. Design for both.

How to measure your windows (so quotes are comparable)

• Measure the width and height of the opening — the recess the grille sits in, not the glass.
• Count every opening, including bathroom and kitchen windows.
• Photograph the window and the wall around it; a fabricator reads the plaster line and the reveal straight off a photo.
• Send the same list to every workshop you ask. Different measurements produce different prices — that is not competition, it is confusion.

Questions to ask before you pay the deposit

• What pipe size and gauge are you using?
• Is this supply-only or supply and fit?
• How many coats, what paint, and is there primer?
• Are any panels openable, and is a key included?
• How long is this quotation valid?
• What is the deposit, and what does it cover?

A workshop that answers those six in writing is one that will still answer your call in month three. A workshop that cannot is quoting a guess.

How much is burglar proof per window in Ghana? Most standard bedroom windows land between GH₵ 700 and GH₵ 1,400 in plain mild steel, fitted. Decorative designs and large openings go higher.

Is burglar proof cheaper than security doors or an alarm? Far cheaper, and it is the layer thieves see from the street. Most homes start with grilles, then add lighting, then an alarm.

Does burglar proof add value when selling? It rarely raises the asking price, but its absence is one of the first things a buyer mentions. In practice it protects the sale rather than inflating it.

Can burglar proof be repainted instead of replaced? Usually yes — wire-brush the rust, spot-prime and repaint every three to four years and a well-made grille lasts decades. Replacement is for grilles built from thin steel in the first place.
