Staircase Railing and Balustrade Prices in Ghana (2026)

A staircase railing is the piece of metalwork guests actually touch. It is also a safety component, which is why the cheapest option is rarely the right one — and why "we will do the railing later" is the most common regret in Ghanaian self-builds.

Typical prices (2026)

Railings are priced per metre run of staircase or balcony, fabricated and installed:

A standard indoor flight of twelve to fifteen steps is roughly four to five metres of run — so a plain mild steel railing on one flight often lands around GH₵ 2,500 – 5,000, and the same flight in stainless and glass can be four times that.

What moves the price

1. Material. Mild steel is cheapest and needs painting; stainless costs more and needs none. Not all stainless is equal — 304 grade behaves very differently from cheaper grades in coastal air, and the difference is invisible on installation day.
2. Design complexity. Plain verticals are fast. Scrollwork, laser-cut panels and curved handrails are hours of skilled work.
3. Glass. Toughened or laminated glass, its thickness, and the clamps or channel that hold it. Do not accept ordinary glass in a balustrade — it is a safety component, and it must be toughened or laminated.
4. Handrail. A hardwood cap on a steel frame feels considerably better under the hand than bare pipe, and adds a modest amount to the price.
5. Finish. Spray paint, hammer finish, powder coating or polished stainless. Powder coating lasts best on mild steel.
6. Fixing and site conditions. Core-drilling into finished marble is slower and riskier than fixing into a raw concrete stair, so order the railing before the stairs are tiled if you can.

The dimensions that keep people safe

Your building regulations and your structural designer govern the details, but the practical rules most fabricators in Ghana work to are worth knowing:

• Height — roughly 900mm–1000mm from the step nosing for a staircase, and higher for a balcony or landing, especially above a drop.
• Gaps — narrow enough that a small child cannot pass through or get a head stuck. The widely used guide is a maximum gap of about 100mm.
• No climbable pattern — horizontal bars are a ladder to a two-year-old. Verticals, or glass, near children.
• Rigidity — a railing must take a firm sideways shove from a grown adult without flexing. This is about post fixing and post spacing, and it is where cheap railings fail.
• Continuous handrail — comfortable to grip, and it should not stop halfway.

Ask any fabricator to talk you through those five before they quote. The good ones will already have.

Before you pay a deposit

• Confirm material and grade (especially "which stainless?").
• Confirm glass type and thickness, if any.
• Confirm post spacing and fixing method.
• Agree when they measure — after the steps are cast, ideally before final tiling.
• Confirm finish and how many coats.
• Get it itemised per metre, with the total run stated, so you can check the arithmetic.

Stainless or mild steel? Mild steel with a good powder coat is fine indoors and much cheaper. Stainless earns its price outdoors, near the coast, and where nobody wants to repaint anything ever.
