Aluminium has quietly become the default window in Ghanaian building — it does not rot like wood, does not rust like steel, and it takes our humidity without complaint. But "aluminium windows" covers everything from a unit that still slides sweetly in year fifteen to a thin frame that drags by the second rainy season.

Here is what the money actually buys.

Aluminium is normally priced per square metre of opening, or per completed unit with glass and installation included.

Aluminium and glass are imported, so these ranges move with the exchange rate. Ask how long the quotation holds; a serious supplier will tell you.

What actually changes the price

1. Profile thickness. The one factor that separates a GH₵ 1,400 window from a GH₵ 2,800 one. Thin-wall profile flexes, the sash drags, and eventually the lock stops meeting the frame. Ask for the profile series and wall thickness in millimetres, in writing.
2. The glass. 4mm clear is the budget default; 5–6mm is sturdier and quieter. Tinted, reflective, frosted and laminated glass each add cost. Toughened or laminated is worth it on doors and anything at floor level.
3. Finish. Mill (plain), anodised, or powder-coated. Powder coating in white, grey, brown or black costs more and lasts far better — especially in coastal Accra, Tema and Takoradi.
4. Hardware. Rollers, handles, locks and friction stays are where cheap units fail first. Good rollers cost a few cedis more and are the entire difference in how a window feels in year three.
5. Size and shape. Big spans need heavier profile and extra support. Arches and odd shapes are fabrication time.
6. Installation and making good. Removing old frames, silicone sealing, sill work and repairing plaster all take labour. Ask whether it is inside the quote.

Sliding, casement or louvre?

• Sliding — the Ghanaian standard. Takes no space when open, straightforward, good value. Catch: only half the window opens at a time.
• Casement — swings out, so the whole opening ventilates and it seals better against driven rain. Costs more and needs clear space outside.
• Louvre — cheapest, maximum airflow, ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and corridors. Less secure and less weathertight, so it is usually paired with burglar proof.

Most houses end up using all three: sliding in the bedrooms and hall, louvre in the wet rooms, casement where the breeze matters.

Does aluminium need burglar proof?

Yes, if security is the point. Aluminium frames and ordinary glass are easy to defeat; the frame is a weather-and-looks decision, not a security one. Budget the burglar proof at the same time, and introduce the two fabricators to each other so the grille and the frame are not fighting over the same 40mm of reveal.

Before you pay a deposit

• Confirm the profile series and thickness, the glass thickness and type, and the colour and finish.
• Confirm whether mosquito nets and installation are inside the price.
• Ask what the warranty covers — rollers, handles, seals — and for how long.
• Insist on a measurement visit: a supplier who quotes without measuring is quoting a guess you will pay for.
